An authenticator app is a tool that helps keep your online accounts more secure by adding an extra layer of protection, called two-factor authentication (2FA). This means that in addition to your password, you'll need a special code from the app to log in.

Here’s how it works:

  1. Setting it up: When you turn on two-factor authentication for a website or app (like your email, social media, and now Apron!), the website gives you a special code, often as a QR code. You need to scan this with the authenticator app, which links to your account.

  2. Getting login codes: The app will start showing you short codes, usually 6 digits, that change every 30 seconds. When you log into your account, you’ll enter your password and the current code from the app.

  3. No internet needed: The app doesn’t need Wi-Fi or data to give you these codes. It works offline so that you can get your login codes anywhere.

  4. Better protection: Even if someone steals your password, they can't get into your account without the special code from your authenticator app, making your accounts much harder to hack.

Popular options like Google Authenticator (Google Play or Apple Store), Microsoft Authenticator, and Authy are easy to use and add extra protection.
